Africa
Through the Eyes of Carlos Lopes
Photographer's Profile
"Born
in Lço. Marques, Moçambique many moons ago, I took refuge in
neighbouring South Africa from the 1974-75 revolution. Life was a
nightmare from the restart, however, soon I found new friends, learnt a
new language, and made a life for myself. Working and studying at the
same time I managed to move up the professional and academic ladders,
not without some obvious difficulty, and quickly established proper
footing. I'm very thankful to South Africans for harbouring me as one
more South African. Once on strong footing (I own some companies
now and possess some academic status), I could then refresh my long
loved passions for wildlife and of course, photography. I was
fortunate enough to have met many greats of both passions, Harry Manners
(from the Mozambique days), Dr. Anthony Hall-Martin, John Locke (great
FGASA courses), to name a few, as well as the icons of African
photography like Darryl Balfour (ever indebted for your teachings), N.
Dennis... I've always found time for wildlife and photography, as if
it's an extension of myself, and was fortunate enough to be a part of
many of the projects involving the wonderful beasts of the wild (like
the Maputo elephant reserve project with the EWT) and others, also
augmenting my knowledge with some husbandry hands-on programmes.
However, I am happiest, when camera in hand, I visit the wildlife edens
throughout Africa and freeze the moment of beauty around me, including
its fast disappearing inhabitants, on film. I hope more and more
people are made aware of the plight of these great animals and their
habitats, perhaps through pictures like the ones you see here, and
become motivated to protect and not destroy."
